In the performance Testaments of the Bulgarian Uprisings, the heroes step down from their stone monuments and sit beside us like living contemporaries. In a world where heroism coexists with hesitation, and freedom is won at the cost of devastation, Benkovski, Rayna Knyaginya, and ordinary Bulgarians must answer one question:
“How much does it cost to be alive, but enslaved? And how much — to die, but free?”
Testaments of the Bulgarian Uprisings is the bible of the Bulgarian character.
It reveals, with astonishing force, the passage out of slavery and the wandering through freedom.
The performance exposes the moral abyss to which the desire always to stand on the right side of history can lead. It also reveals the moral horizon one can reach by rising up against reason itself.
If we choose usefulness, we die beneath its ruins.
If we allow ourselves to make a mistake, we live beneath the immortal arch of freedom.
The performance Testaments of the Bulgarian Uprisings is not only a remembrance of the past, but also a choice before the future.
The performance is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
