Nirvana

On a night in 1913, a gunshot rings out, bringing an end to one of Bulgaria’s most famous romantic tragedies. From that moment on, the story of Lora Karavelova and Peyo Yavorov in Konstantin Iliev’s play Nirvana ceases to be merely biographical and becomes a myth — a myth about the impossibility of two people becoming one without losing themselves; about the eternal struggle between Eros and Thanatos.

All of this unfolds shortly after the sinking of the Titanic and just before Europe is about to destroy itself in the First World War. The world as we know it is beginning to crack.

And somewhere amid the deafening rumble of the approaching historical storm, two people are trapped in the cage of a shared madness — a battle in which there can be no victor. Two beings, predator and prey at once, lion and antelope, locked in an embrace so tight that the kiss turns into death.

Here, love does not save, forgive or elevate. It burns, possesses and devours, inexorably leading towards the eternal waters and the twilight horizons of infinity.

This is not merely the Bulgarian story of two extraordinary figures. It is a European story of loss and surrender.

Nirvana is neither a memorial service nor a requiem. It is an autopsy and a resurrection of love and devotion.
